This book is focused towards advisors themselves. For me, it presents a mixed bag but overall provides a positive insight into a select few unique advisors. Surely, Roy’s emphasis on what he calls “Life Planning” just reinforces what we have known all along – successful families desire holistic planning with a focus on making their lives better, not simply managing their money. Sure this book points out many of the shortcomings of my industry, financial services: the conflicts of interest, etc. Yet, I also feel it takes a strong “left turn” in his almost Freudian view of the necessity to dig into a client’s childhood for pains about money as the key to success. Just a bit of a departure from the reality/emphasis that planning and life are not a solitary event. Finally, this book does emphasize great planning as an ongoing process and how fixed fees reduce overall conflict for true financial planning services and advice.
What caught my eye: I do like some of the questions Roy poses in the book, especially, “What do you want to retire TO!”
